Choose your words carefully…

What do I mean by this? Those exact words…be careful in the words you choose. When talking with your boss, coworker, or client, the words you choose in meetings,’1 on 1′, or group settings can affect those around you. First, watch this video. Yes, I know you are busy, but it takes less than two (2) minutes to watch it. Then, let’s discuss it…and thanks…

Power of Words

The young lady states: “I wrote the same but different words…”. How many times do we find ourselves in similar situations? I am not necessarily talking about rewriting a blind man’s sign, but where the choice of words or in my case, my lack of thought in choosing the right words caused uncomfortableness, anxiety, anger, pain, or hurtfulness. We all think we are saying the same thing but different words can invoke different behaviors in people. Sometimes that is a good thing, but for most of us it leads to bad outcomes. So how does this pertain to work and how can I try this in the workplace? One way is to ‘prime’ your meetings.

You can prime your next meeting by first setting the tone of your meeting. Take a mental gauge, and make sure the audience is in the right frame of mind (and if not, get them in a healthy mental disposition or postpone the meeting). Choose your words carefully particularly when starting the meeting. The right words can make everyone in the room comfortable resulting in defensive shields being lowered. Using the right words, inform everyone of the meeting purpose. Keep priming and before you know it, collaboration and creativity start to grow all due to carefully chosen words. This is the way we all envision all meetings should transpire.

If you don’t believe me, that is understandable. But I tell you what…watch that video again, and prime a few meetings. Who knows? Maybe it will work…
