Tired of waiting for your wireless carrier to update your phones operating system to the latest release? Want to test out your Windows Phone 8 apps on pre-release software? Last October Microsoft released an app called “Windows Phone Preview for Developers” for Windows Phone 8. This app allows Windows Phone owners access to pre-release software.Few things to consider before enrolling in to the program:

  1. Updates only include operating system updates from Microsoft and no firmware and drivers included. Firmware and drivers will still come from your device manufacturer.
  2. When you apply the pre-release software, there is no way to go back to the old release.
  3. You may also void any warranty from your phone’s mobile service provider or OEM. You can check the support forum for any issues after the update http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=324361
  4. Your operating system must be at least build 8.0.10322.71.

How to get the app? You need to be registered as a developer. There are three ways to do so.

  1. Free option, register on Windows Phone App Studio.
  2. Register as a Windows Phone developer. Currently on promotion for $19 USD.
  3. Developer unlock your phone.

Once you are registered the app can be downloaded here. The app will install from the Windows Phone Store directly onto your phone over the air. Check the “Enable Preview for Developers” to enroll for the updates from the app. Go to your phone “Settings” and then select “Phone Update” to receive the latest operating system updates.
