April’s Story
Cancer is a word I know too well. I lost my mom to ovarian cancer 17 years ago. My kids only know her from the memories I share with them. I lost both my grandmothers to cancer before I was old enough to call them grandmothers. My aunt, cousin, and grandfather passed away from cancer. I have friends who are cancer survivors and friends who are fighting the disease today. Statistically, one in three women will battle cancer in their lifetime. It is time to stop that. We cannot let cancer win!
Why support ResearcHERS? Simply put, it’s women fundraising to support women-led research. Did you know women are significant contributors to cancer research but are underrepresented in research leadership? ResearcHERS recognized that women bring diverse and unique perspectives to cancer research, making invaluable contributions and discoveries. As a result, ResearcHERS is committed to growing women-led cancer research, empowering the careers of women researchers, and supporting the discovery of life-saving therapies.
This month of May, I am co-chairing the ResearcHERS of Indiana campaign with two friends and standing with 43 other remarkable women to raise funds for cancer research. These women are amazing—some are fighting cancer today, while others are survivors. Our team is filled with women of diverse backgrounds and careers, but all have one thing in common: kicking cancer’s butt!
Kelly’s Story
Cancer has affected my family too often, including my cousin, grandmother, uncle, and recently, my father, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in 2022. I am passionate about raising funds for cancer research, and more specifically, women-led cancer research that pioneers new approaches and therapies.
My father was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer in June of 2021. We chose his physician due to the groundbreaking studies she was leading to help patients live longer, more enjoyable lives. While my father saw several physicians, consistently, it was the female physicians and nurses who spoke to him in a non-clinical manner and showed empathy with their questions and bedside manner.
I am committed to raising awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society ResearcHERS campaign in remembrance of my father and the many compassionate women who touched my family during his cancer journey. Join us in supporting women-led cancer research for a brighter, healthier future for all.
How Can YOU Help?
Our goal is to raise over $140,000 during the month of May. We also have our sights on winning the national campaign, something Indiana has achieved in the last five years. Please join us in the fight. By contributing, you will be helping to fund the important work that continues to save lives from cancer. Here’s the link to our fundraising page.
